I have been collecting lead soldiers since I was 7 years old, purchasing my first set of soldiers at J.L. Hudsons in downtown Detroit.
Years later In the 1970s I came across a plastic Polar bear marked Britains on the bottom while visiting an antique fair with my young daughters.
That ignited a desire for more. Since then, I have scoured the world for Farm, Zoo, Circus, R.R. and the like through monthly lists, Auction sales, visits to England, France and Germany, shows and today, mostly via the internet.
The rest is history and 9000 pieces of grand accumulation that I hope will find their way into other collections to be enjoyed as much as I have.

In Chicago in the 1950’s, Jim as a young boy spent many an hour staring at the toy soldiers on the third floor shelves of Vaughn’s Flower and Seed Store trying to select the one or two $2.00 box of soldiers his parents allotted for his special birthday present. As a teen, having discovered girls, he put away his toys only to later discover that toy soldiers were still being sold and made in the 1970’s and 1980’s, but for much more than two bucks. Now as an attorney living in California, he could afford a wee bit more. And so his love was rekindled and his collections grew, until they spilled from his soldier room at home in San Juan Capistrano to his office cabinets in Irvine. Today having downsized, he offers some of his prized collection to other lovers of history stirred by this hobby that awakens the child in us all.

(still Open), where he found his first Britain’s Set #1307, the Sixteenth Century Knights. As often happens, his collection of Britain’s and Dinky Toys went into storage when he went off to the US Navy in September 1962. Upon returning in late 1966 he focused on College, raising a family, and building a Oral Radiology Practice with 6 locations in San Diego, CA. over the next 40 Years. During his early years in business, he come across his old collection, but didn’t have time to do much with it. Then in the Mid 1980’s, he found a book by James Opie called Britain’s Toy Soldiers,1893-1932, that would change everything! Mike's collection is offered on Day 2 of this sale, April 17th, 2021.

Married for 55 years to Mary, he has two children and five grandchildren. His favorite item in the collection is the extremely hard to find Nymph from the Britains Garden Pond. Mr. McCowan was a participating winning bidder in both the Malcolm Forbes auction held by Christies in New York and in the Britains Archive auction held by Christies in London.
