Gamages, Britains Royal Scots Greys
variation on set #32 in an excellent Soldiers of the British Empire box, 5 figures carrying short carbines, cited in Opie, photo 60, row 3; Restored, excellent, box very good. This lot was acquired via a well known English auction house, where they were described as Britains "Specials", in many cases supplied through Gamages. There is no compelling evidence that Gamages ever produced such special orders. There is no doubt that they are one off special commissions, but the identity of the maker/ painter remains unconfirmed.
